TIOGA COUNTY WORLD WAR II VETERANS LIST

Tioga County is compiling a list of all World War II Veterans from Tioga County.  Unlike the Civil War, large companies and even regiments were organized at the county level.  Everything was done at the federal level with drafts and enlistments.   Stan Darroch LTC. RET. from Wellsboro is heading the project.  He is interested in obtaining as much information as possible about those World War II Veterans born in or who resided in Tioga County.  Military discharge papers are a great source of information.  Among the highest-ranking officers from Tioga County were Rear Admiral Peter Fischler (1895-1950), Brigadier General William K. MacNulty (1892-1964), and Commodore Charles Frank Russell (1883-1977).  If you have someone in your family who served and you have information on that service, please get in touch with Stan at [email protected].

CELEBRATING 250 YEARS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Many people have noticed a sign in front of the Robinson House Museum in Wellsboro.  The Tioga County Historical Society is joining the Pennsylvania Lumber Heritage Region to celebrate the Semiquincentennial of the United States this year.   The Lumber Heritage Region has created an interactive game for hikers and tourists visiting the region.  They decided to create a game with three "quests" to encourage people to travel to different parts of the Lumber Heritage Region, which encompasses 15 counties.  Included in the region, besides Tioga County, are Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Forest, Indiana, Jefferson, Lycoming, McKean, Potter, and Warren.

There are three categories in the game, each with the headings Adventurer, Explorer, and Historian.  There are 15 places or trails in each of the three categories.   In each category, there will be something from each of the 15 counties involved.  The first category appears to be aimed primarily at hikers and bikers visiting the area.  It involves trails and paths such as the Pine Creek Rail Trail.   The second and third games are mainly for tourists traveling by car or motorcycle.   The second is called the "Explorer" and takes people to landmarks such as the Tionesta Dam and Lake, the Kinzua Bridge Visitor Center, and the Austin Dam ruins in Potter County.  In Tioga County, it includes the Barbour Rock Trail out to the Canyon.  The "Historian" category includes historical societies and museums such as the Heisey House Museum in Clinton County, the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum in Potter County, and the Robinson House Museum in Tioga County.

                                                      JAILHOUSE ELM DIES

The oldest living landmark in Tioga County is dead, aged over 200 years.   The American Elm that stood in front of the old brick jail in Wellsboro was cut down on Tuesday morning, June 2, 2026.   It was growing before Tioga County was formed in 1804.  It lived through George Washington's presidency.  The cutting of three large branches this spring signaled that the tree was in distress.
